I am freshly graduated from college but am certain that I still have a lot to learn before I set my life on any permanent track, therefore I chose to pursue seasonal labor. With that in mind, the key for me was finding a place where I could both bring something to the table and be able to learn something. A bonus was finding something that I love to do.
Here are 10 things I learned as a first-year camp counselor at Camp Voyageur.
John Erdmann’s glad you asked. For the first time in 70 years, campers won’t be moving into the cabins this Sunday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the penninsula is still crawling with life; veterans Alex Kvanli, Mikey Meves, Kyle Montgomery, Harrison Pratt, and newcomer Jack Diedrich are working hard to get the peninsula tuned up, create interactive virtual programming, and outfit CV families for Boundary Waters canoe trips. Improvements and Maintenance A summer without campers has given us ample time to tackle maintenance projects around camp that have slipped through the cracks over the years. On any given day,...
What is your favorite part about the trail? Reading for fun was something I never really did growing up, in fact my reading level was so poor that holding me back a grade was a consideration. When I came to camp and went on the trail for the first time, I brought a book with me, Fahrenheit 451. While on trail I got this feeling like nothing before, where my mind was fully free to picture and experience the story as I read it. I fell in love with reading while on the trail, especially fantasy, where the book brings...
Where is your favorite place in the wilderness? Laying on a rock, on an island, on Crooked Lake with the sun shining. What is your favorite part about the trail? Devouring lunch after a successful morning of paddling. What is your favorite part about our in-camp program? Evening Programs and the Big Games. Who or what inspires you? People who are passionate inspire me. What are you looking forward to most this summer? I am most excited to get back outside and see the campers again. What is one piece of advice you would give a new camper? Embrace the...
What are you looking forward to most this summer? I’m looking forward to seeing all the returning campers, and hearing about all the fun things they did with their time away from camp. Where is your favorite place in the wilderness? My favorite place to visit in the wilderness has to be Devil Track River on the Superior Hiking Trail. It’s a beautiful rapid river that links up with the SHT near Grand Marais. It’s an excellent place to spend the afternoon or night after a long day of hiking! What is your favorite part about the trail? My favorite...
As a first-year counselor, I did not know what I was getting into coming to Camp Voyageur, but CV’s amazing community and knack for tripping exceeded all of my expectations. Here is a list of my top-five expectations that were eventually met with reality. Expectation #1 There is no power, running water, or working bathrooms at Camp Voyageur.
The paths are raked, the cabins swept and the stage is set for 2019 staff training. As the second week of work camp comes to an end, we say goodbye to generous CV friends and alumni who volunteer valuable hard work and time to prepare facilities for incoming staff. Thanks to Phil Dodge, Tom (N’orleans), the Clarks, Jim and Jim, Kerry Claros and Will Carls. Mikey Meves, along with his crew from Menomonie, and Alex Kvanli cleared brush, downed trees, then cut and moved the logs from the depths of the forest to the sauna. Although hauling wood is back-breaking...
