It is a well rehearsed routine by session 3 for accomplishing a very important mission: breaking the ice. A number of camp-wide name games such as sharks and minnows in the lake and dodge ball where in order to tag someone you must know their name help make it easy and fun to get to know one another. We'll also have a rendezvous at the fire circle, one of the most scenic outlooks on the peninsula, to have a hearty grilled feast. No more than a day ago, the last group of Voyageurs arrived in camp. They came in from everywhere: Grand Portage on Lake Superior, the Quetico-Provincial Park in Canada, and from all over the Boundary Waters (BWCAW). This story comes in from camper Keenan about his first round trip (and first trip with Camp Voyageur) in the Boundary Waters. What had initially started as a pretty regular route ended up becoming arguably the most adventurous trip of the first round to go out! This trip story comes in from camper Max on his first round trip of second session with a little editing help from his trip counselor Ethan Shafron. Max experienced one of the fast-moving, hard-hitting storms typical of the Boundary Waters during July. It was just before dusk, about 9 PM, when it hit all of us. In the second session, two rounds of trips go out, the first being 4-6 days long, and the second being 8 or more days. This second round is where the real adventures start, and this year is no exception. There's a lot of tradition at camp when it comes to the evening programs. We run a camp-wide game of Clue, host a radio show called WELK, and even a bean auction. Voyageurs Return!

In no less than 5 days, campers returned from their second round of trips in the Boundary Waters (BWCAW). Despite starting the trip with a little liquid sunshine, morale stayed high with the eminent promise for wilderness adventure. Groups planned their own routes in the Western half of the boundary waters. Just about every trip covers new ground, for even the veteran counselors haven’t seen a quarter of the lakes in the Boundary Waters.
